Stock Market Game - Making Money

Post by PaxBritannia »

After playing hall's market script, I suddenly remembered something:

There is this game which is essentially the same as Hall's basic implementation which uses real data. It then scores players according to their profits.

It selects the top 100 players of the game (out of the tens of thousands) and then uses REAL money in the REAL stock market to purchase the stocks that the top 100 bought under a shared trust fund.

The investments of this fund regularly exceed even the private Fortune 500 investment departments.

Smart eh?

It doesn't come off as theft or, if those few players a significant share, a sort of sweat shop arrangement for all those who contribute but get nothing?

I've got an idea - have a competition for making browser games - then I'll take the top player of the competitions result and use that as my property. Same principle.

There is so much corruption in "stock market services" that it isn't even funny. Some of the worst are "penny stock services", which have people subscribe for free to get a penny stock once a day or once a week that is going to blow up. The reason the service is free is because the owners buy a crapload of the stock at bare-bones prices before it is announced, then they announce it to their thousands of subscribers who all run out to buy shares, pumping up the value of the stock temporarily. They then sell it at its peak (which lasts only days), making thousands of dollars off an artificially pumped-up stock price. It is a glorified and legal pump-and-dump scheme, making millions off of suckers, who most likely end up losing everything they put into it.
