Cheap Rear Wheel Drive Car!

Post by Chris »

I've had my license a while now and I'm sick of driving my mum's Polo Bluemotion aka Slowmotion.

What I want is a car with:
- Rear Wheel Drive
- A BIG Engine. Not a crappy 1.5 liter 4 cylinder or something. I want something like a 2 liter straight 6 at least.
- Something that can be tuned to kick out around 250 hp on low budget.
- Must be light to save me on road tax.
- Easy to tune.
- Plenty of available parts.
- MUST BE CHEAP

So far I've come up with an old Porsche 944. But it's hard trying to get one in decent condition on my budget.

I know a few guys here are real petrol heads. Anyone have any good suggestions?

Yeah, pretty much any European car you can think of and quite a lot of American ones.

Ouch, Porsches have expensive parts if anything goes wrong with it. And things go wrong with them, like, every 20 minutes or so. Definitely not a car to get on any kind of budget.

If Hondas are plentiful over there, a Honda Civic could be a good choice. Of course not as sporty or head turning as a Porsche, but they are very cheap to keep running generally, they have a light body that makes them faster than an Accord, and the V-Tech engine can really kick. With just a few parts they can be quite a beast.

EDIT: What about Japanese cars?

First problem with a civic is any in my budget have either had some wanker trying to tune the engine and making a complete balls of it. Or they're really old and rusting to bits and aren't road worthy. Another problem with a civic is it's front wheel drive. And that's rather gay.

If I were to get a Porsche 944, I could still buy the parts brand new from Porsche. There are also plenty of second hand cars available that aren't road worthy anymore for next to no money. And if they're 25+ years old it's free on road tax. But then as you said the parts are rather expensive. The biggest problem I'd have with having that car is the fact that I'd have to say I drive a Porsche. I could pick up a Porsche 944 cheaper and in better condition than an old Japanese car. But in the long run I think it will cost me more.

I could also get an old BMW 3-series . Those are real solid cars. But again the problem would be the price of the parts.

Man, there must be some serious difference in Porsche prices in Europe lol. Even a rusted 70's Porsche costs about as much as a brand-new Honda Civic in the States. I am honestly not that familiar with car models, so maybe the 944 is a more economy model they don't import here. In the States Porsche is considered a top-of-the-top-of-the-line, with basically nothing, used or otherwise, going under $40,000.

Porsche's are generally expensive here as well. The Porsche 944 is basically an upgrade of the 924. It cost 50 grand when it was new. It is one of the of the first models to be mass made. Here's a link to an advertisement: http://link.marktplaats.nl/388977880

When I compare this car to a Nissan 240sx s13 or alike from about the same age. It's just as expensive and quite a bit better. Although probably not as cheap on parts. And because it's classed as an old timer. The older it gets, as long as it's looked after(which I don't really plan to do much. Mash that engine up :D) it will only get increase in value.

Ahh, I gotcha. I was just taken back a bit by any Porsche being considered "a budget car" lol.

you can get 240sx's for a decent price over here. I had one about 3 years ago. Paid $2500 for it, nephew wrecked it and I still got $600 for the motor and tranny :)

280z's are rare but are BEASTS!!! God i love them. Only good Nissans are about 95 and earlier. Newer ones are junk.

Toyota is best you can buy hands down but are pricey because everyone knows this. Ford are garbage, always have been always will be Mexican junk. Chevy doesn't do anything special anymore and the way Dodge screwed over all their dealerships make them so undesirable.

BMW's are pricey and the parts are very high along with Porches, also Porche clutches are made from cardboard.

Hondas are great cars, too. Definitely right there with Toyota, and maybe a bit better with the safety recall after safety recall that the new Toyotas seem to be suffering.
