computer wizz needed :D

Post by Torniquet »

ok peoples.... need to get a new proccessor, which means a new mobo aswell (Y)

im bored of having a slow ass 1.8 single core peice of naff lol.

im lookin at getting a nice bundle consisting of a AM3 Athlon x2 260 proccessor (3.2GHz)
Asus M4N68T-M Motherboard.
2Gb GeIL DDR3 1033MHz ram.
http://www.digitalpromo.co.uk/bundle-as ... -5612.html

i already have a 1Gb Radeon HD 4350 gfx card (will get a better one another day)
2x 250gb SATA HDDs

currently i have a 300w PSU.

now my question to you is thus...

What kinda PSU will i need lol. i know 300w wont cut it. can i get away qith a 500w one or will this need somthing with a lil more kick?

~edit~ i have found a 620w PSU for the same price as the 500 and with the right amount of sata connectors :p will this do?~~

tnx in advanced xxx

AAAAH! AMD :o . Sorry dude but that's instant fail.

Get a Xeon with 32 cores or something.. That would make a pretty damn fast computer lol!.

Nah that's too expensive.

If you want cheap I'd get a AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition. Don't know what socket it uses.
500w power supply should do the job.

Maybe you can't get a Phenom II, but if you could pick up a Phenom or Intel i3 (not sure what fits your mobo), that would future-proof you for a while. At this point, Athlon and Dual Core are both quite old formats that haven't been used in well over a year.

If you can't afford to upgrade to a Phenom or i3 or i5 now, I would wait and try to save a bit more. Computer hardware value has a major curve where you need at least about $100 to get anything, but then small additional amounts of money will get you a lot more. It really is not worth buying something that is a couple of years old if what you currently have is still powering up and working. 110 pounds may get you something OK, but 175 may get you something 2x better that will keep you up-to-date twice as long.

not alot fits my mobo, nothing with any kick lol.

i have found this one http://www.dabs.com/products/asus-amd-p ... -73GY.html

phenom II x2 555 BE processor.

the 620w is £20, but thats about as far as i can really stretch.

i dont want to get summit that is to much for wot i use it for, but not be completly useless a week or 2 after getting it lol.

urgh just noticed... i dont think it comes with a cpu fan, any advise (if it dont lol)

i really suck at hardware lol.

Aren't fans really cheap? They sell them in the states for about $10 at Best Buy if you hook them up yourself.

Honestly, I am not a hardware wiz either. In fact, working on computer hardware makes me kind of frustrated and queezy. Software I can handle.

All I know is that if your current rig is still functional the best thing to do is hold on to your money and save up a bit more, hock some stuff, or maybe hold out for some fund bumps from Christmas if you can't get a Phenom (preferably II) or an Intel i3 or i5. I say that because just a reasonable amount more money could keep you future-proofed for 3 or 4x longer than grabbing something last generation or older. If not, then you may be in the same position in just another year or so.
