Well, it is not really a religious holiday. But the root cause of it does lie in the religious differences between Pilgrims and Quakers.

Basically, it is a made-up holiday to further the propaganda that the US was created by the Pilgrams.
beautiful way to put it :D

it is sad how much history is lost and the lies and propaganda that has been created

The kids will sometimes wear pilgrim hats in kindergarten, but for the most part, all Americans do for Thanksgiving is just eat turkey and get together with their family. It is nice that such a negative story surrounding the holiday has become something very positive that brings families together, sometimes forcing amends in torn families.

Our schools around here are forbidden from doing anything "thanksgiving-like" because it might offend someone... so our school has a "Fall Musical" that falls between Thanksgiving and Christmas. So we don't even get the pilgrim costumes any more :)

Thanksgiving is just a day to rest up before Black Friday, eat a lot of turkey with family and watch some football :)
