Unity 5 is now free

Don't know if this is in direct response to UE4 going free, but Unity 5 has released and there is also a Personal Edition.

The Personal Edition is free to use, as long as you don't make over $100,000 in revenues from a game, but it appears to be the full Unity Engine, with all features included. Only thing is a splash screen.

I had already paid for a pre-order of Unity 5 months ago, so this free announcement leaves me with mixed feelings. If I'd known they would release it free, I never would have pre-ordered :( And they are offering refunds of people who purchased Unity Pro... but not for people who pre-ordered (WTF?)

*edit* Oh, nm, that looks like the 'no refund' only applies to educational licenses... there may be hope :)

Unity 5 is free but it's the personal version, I'm not sure if it has the previously Pro-Only features such as Shadows or Water or Image Effects.. If they want to compete with Unreal they should give Unity 5 Pro for free with royalties or at least for those who make less than ... let's say 10k ...

All the engine features are included in the Personal Edition (not sure about the Black UI)

Black UI can be changed in the settings ^^

I need to find out if that's true :ugeek: but most certainly, I'll wrap my last game in Unity... and... move on. (UE4)

I do not see Unreal competing in the indie game market just yet. Unity has way more plugins and low budget indie community stuff.

However I would LOVE to see Unity get humbled some.

I think that's because Unity is more user friendly and like you said has lots of community tutorials and help. But Unreal for what I've seen is not so bad in the user-friendlyness either, it's just different.

Epic Games has been waiting and watching Unity for years to see if there was cash in this sector. No doubt the number of Unity splash screens on the mobile app stores finally convinced them that there was, and thus they fired the first of what will probably be many shots this week, and Unity was ready to fire right back.

Indie developers are the ones who are going to profit in spades from this war.
