People still do 3D? :D

Actually, if you are a dev in that space, it is certainly something worth looking into. Back in the days when Torque (and not even T3D) was the de-facto standard, everyone would have jumped or joy. I'm not sure what I think of the limitation on scripting though. Its either that string pictures together kismet thing, or c++. That will kill your development productivity; even i it sends a robot assistant to your house/office to clean up and make coffee for you. If I was still doing 3D, I don't think it would peel me away from Unity.

UDK is NOT for the lone indie developer or indies like us. In the industry we are not even considered indie. Indie is mainly termed for small shops making a few 100k or less.

Probably makes it even less for us haha.

But still cool, though. I know that 25% royalty was a killer for a lot of devs, since in some cases your margin may be around 30% or so while you are paying off development fees. 5% is much more reasonable.

Plus, $19/month is even more reason to get the lead out and get that game finished! :lol:

Actually I've taken a look at some of the UE4 work being done by single developers and the hierarchy system for visual scripting can handle a lot of functions. I'm sure an experienced programmer would be able to take it even further.

I think the key is to not expect miracles right off the hop, set milestones that are achievable and go from milestone to milestone! :)

As a hobbyist game dev, I gave up on 3D long, long ago. The art requirements are so sky-high today just so players won't attack the game for its looks, and a low-tech 3D look is typically much worse than a low-tech 2D look. Really the only option for a hobbyist to make a lush, 3D world is to go hyper-stylized like Minecraft did.

If I was a dual modeler/coder, I may feel differently, but I'm not and never will be. Plus, the sheer amount of artwork you need just to make a passable RPG is insane. In 2D games, you can just make a couple of tree sprites and a few grass sprites, throw them around and you have a forest. But in a 3D game, a forest has to actually look like a forest, with dozens or even hundreds of unique trees, brushes, tall grasses, flowers, etc. I know there are packages to help with foliage specifically, but the issue is the same all across the board, from buildings to deserts to spaceships.
