TMMOKIT outdated?

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

Been talking a lot to the Linux community and it seems there is a huge bulk of players looking for MMORPGs that play under native Linux. While that sounds great the only issue with it is they are very much open source fanatics that do not spend a dime on software. Very hard to get any money from them to support the game. This raises the question is the TMMOKIT 1.5 version really graphically outdated? I mean I am seeing lots of 2d or iso games pop up and games like love do well. I look back on my own screens and think wow, that wasn't too bad :)

Is game play enough to still bring in a small collection of players?

Maybe I am missing something, but what is the connection between Linux and TMMOKit? Did the kit create a Linux client?

you can compile a Linux client with the kit. I will have to look up how it was done but yes it is possible.

Ahh, that makes sense then. But, like you said, they looove open-source software, and some of them even consider commercial software development to be the worst thing to ever happen to the computer (which I couldn't disagree more with). I think that is one of the major reasons why no serious commercial game headway has been made into Linux. There are plenty of games on Mac, and I think Mac and Linux both have around the same market share.

Compared to the 11,000,000 subscribers WoW supposedly has, 30,000 is a drop in the bucket. Plus, you need to figure that a good share of those 30,000 probably have the ability to play under Windows, and Blizzard just doesn't need to care :)

... wish I had that problem :D

That and it would be quite a port to move it to Linux. Even though the bulk of the rendering routines are in OpenGL, I am sure it would still take a couple of man years to get it all worked out and ported. Just not worth it to add a drop in the bucket compared to how many subscribers they have on Windows and Mac. While commercial games are non-existent on Linux, if anyone would port to it I could see it being WoW (Linux would be one of the last untapped frontiers for Blizzard's juggernaut). If they see no use in it, I couldn't figure anyone else would either lol.

And if I am not wrong, doesn't WoW run great in WINE on Linux? sure not native, but the performance last I heard was close to Windows, so then there is no need for making a native client just for 30.000 people.

yeah I believe that was blizzards thought on it. There are still many Linux users that are anti-wine and want native programs.
