Hey there =)

Post by zandzpider »

Hello!

My name is Daniel, i am 28 and live in Norway.
I love Sci-fi, Series, Movies and geeking out with my computer (gaming or programming)
I develop with my Windows computer and deploy/test/run my code in my trustee Debian server (Linux)

I have been working with PHP, MySQL and Javascript (mostly jQuery) for many years now and i've tried on numerous occasions to make a game.
Latley i have been working with socket.io and nodejs, so this was kinda perfect timing ;D

This time around, i was inspired by some tutorials i stumbled onto, and i decided i wanted to make a 2d sidescroller, multiplayer ofcourse.

"How to make an HTML5 MMO with Impact.js, Node.js & Socket.io" is my current running tutorial ;-)

I was wonder tho, before i blow 99$ on ImpactJS.
Is is still maintained?
Is there some sort of library that is better today?
Any tips here is well recieved =)

Thanks!

yes it is still well maintained and used. I would recommend however checking out Isogenic melonjs, and craftyjs first just to see if they provide what you need.

I have owned Impactjs for about 2 years now and still recommend it however.

Welcome! Node is a pretty mean technology, and it is quickly becoming the go-to technology for any kind of real-time web work.

Like Halls said, I would check around a bit before buying it. I have owned Impact also for about 2 years now, and while it is a great engine and it is maintained, I do have to say that its edge has been eroding a bit. Some of the open source engines are hot on its heals, and they don't cost a cent. Isogenic Engine is a commercial engine, but it is designed specifically for MMOs. It is a very, very deep engine, though, but since you do have a lot of programming experience, you could likely learn it. It would just take some time to learn. Also like Halls said, check out CraftyJS. If you want to take a look at more of what is out there, check out this list. When ImpactJS came out, it absolutely smoked the competition, but new engine features and updates to its level editor (Weltmeister) have been few and far between. Most version updates have simply been tweaking existing technology.

However, there is something very, very cool that Impact has over the other engines: Impact++. It is a 3rd party library for Impact that really adds a lot of additions that Impact should have been adding natively over the past few years such as dynamic lighting, more camera control options, path finding, a true particle engine, UI elements, expanded Entity and Game objects, etc. It is so useful I would almost suggest to get it on day 1 and make it part of your core ImpactJS learning regiment. That way you aren't having to unlearn the "Impact way" to make use of it later

There are few tuts out there on Impact++, but the docs are pretty decent on it. Also check out the "reactor" demo that comes with it, as it steps through all the major features.
