Seanoseanohay says hello

Postby seanoseanohay » Mon Mar 15, 2010 2:59 pm

Hello everybody,
I found this site from one of hallsofvallhalla's youtube video's. It looks like a great place to learn and discuss topics.

About me, I am a student at CSUMB studing to be a software engineer. I'm a musician and mountain climber, though those may not be very applicable here. Anyway I am working with and learning C++,python,PHP,javascript, and java. I like them all and am hoping to master a few of them.

I am looking to make a MMO webbaed strategy game. Me and my best friend (an artist) are working on making a game similar to Travian but with a bunch of differences. I think this is a massive project to take on. But, since I have a baby coming in a few months it may be a better hobby than playing drums in the living room.

Thanks to everybody for all their work and I look forward to talking to you guys later.

Welcome! Honestly, though, I would have to suggest to just work on one programming language at a time. Trying to learn 2 or more at once, particularly if you are a beginner, is destined to end in confusion. It will typically take about a year to get to an intermediate level with a coding language with lots of study and even more practice. I would suggest to work with PHP first. You have a very realistic goal to work towards (making a browser-based MMO) that will act as a wonderful learning experience. You learn coding languages about 5x faster if you have a reasonable project with plenty of tutorial guidance to work on. A PHP MMO project would also definitely teach you programming logic and how to think like a programmer, which is about 75% of the initial learning curve.

Best of luck with it and welcome to the forums :)
