What is the appeal in it over a straight Linux distro?

The main appeal is a non windows and MAC OS yet similar. I must say it is VERY close to windows 10. Its real neat OS so far.

Technically the $15 was for the third party software that is included

There are several Linux GUI systems that come very close to a Windows or MacOS-like experience. I have heard the one used by Mint is very Windows-like and full featured.

But I guess if the $15 was for third-party software that you may theoretically need on another Linux distro, it isn't all that bad. I am also not completely against straight-up commercial Linux distros. The general idea is that by paying, you will get support. And for some advanced usages, that could be more than worth the money.
