Shards of the Galaxy

Have a project in the works but not much media? How about an idea you are turning into a project? Maybe a game design document you want to start with. This is the place.

Shards of the Galaxy

Post by kbrooker99206 »

Ok been away a while been super busy...

I got my hands on a copy of the original source code for Star Wars Galaxies then I had to make it work(cause there was no documentation at all and it did not compile in any of the newer compilers) which i have, then i had to ask the original devs permission to use the engine at all lol... which i have... Now ive setup a test area for making it work as was when the version that it was was patched to live.

However i need help now cause In addition to needing to build a whole new game(thankfully i have all the needed tools of the engine to do so) I need testers baddly and staff...

So without futher adeu... Please come by and check it out http://shardsofthegalaxy.tk the server is always online unless i am patching or working on it... you cannot use any client releases but my own all you gotta do is register on the site and download the client install let it patch and play... you can make 20 toons... there are testing terminals in game for people to get gear and so forth on

Now for the staff lol I need peeps with the following skills ASAP there is a link to the application form for these spots
C++ Developer
C# Developer
Perl Developer
Java Developer
World Builder
Maya Designer
Texture Designer
Sound Specialist
Community Relations Specialist
GM
Quality Assurance Tester

There are others but...
be gentle this thing is an insane piece of software and ive spent 8 months getting it this far from nothin lol

Very cool! From the positions you are looking for, it sounds like you are intending to do custom content development versus just maintaining the existing content, right? I have always been interested in MMO emulators but have also always been worried about C&D orders. But since SWG closed years ago maybe they are leaving the private servers alone?

I have to create new content and a whole new game due to disneys licensing practices its the only way i can use the engine is to make whole new games with it... They leave ones alone who follow the abandonware regulations pertaining to distribution and so forth the law states that you can preserve access to any game legally of that game is discontinued... You have to verify that they originally had access to the game and such but yeah... cant make money or donations things like that... basically they dont care what i do as long as its not star wars lol

Basically the test center is for preserving access and making sure the engine is working so that i have a working example of how it all fits together as it is ENORMOUS it smokes any engine ive tried in its size and complexity millions of files i shit you not lol...

Anyway yeah i am going to make a entirely new non star wars mmo totally original with the engine

Oh yeah, that is how Ryzom was, too. Not sure if you ever looked through that one. But in the MMO/PBBG community it was pretty big news a few years back when Ryzom open-sourced its engine. But when people actually started trying to tear into it, we hit a brick wall because it was so gigantic, hacked-together and had basically no documentation. So yeah, any commercial MMO is going to be an absolute beast as far as the codebase goes.

Quick question, and maybe I am missing the point of why you are doing this by asking, but since you are going to be making 100% new content, have you considered using any other engines or codebases, such as maybe Unity + one of the commercial MMO kits? The setup and development would likely be much more manageable and you would have a much larger community of developers to draw from to create a team. I assume part of what you are wanting to do involves using the same engine that SWG uses, though, right?

You cant ask for donations? I would assume you could. Especially if the donations were for the forums or art content.

And let me give a history about a emu experience... A MMO quite a few years back actually tried to inspire some emus to exist in the thought of it would bring more players to the original. A brilliant idea that worked...for a while. I was chosen as one to host. This is back when i was a big pat of mmorpgmaker forums. One of the members there was a part of a large game site that is now dead or at least not as big as they were...Well he called me out and said I was a liar and a thief and I stole the software and no way this company would allow it blah blah blah. We are talking thousands of people reading this guy blast me and call me a liar. When he found out I was in the truth and they really did he went nuts. He blasted the company for allowing it, right on this big game companies blog and they in the end shut us all down.
In the end this game magazine and site is pretty much dead now and I believe him and others like him were a big part of their demise, hell they had the largest Neverwinter nights mod area and now look at them....nothing because they also screwed them over....
Anyways it was jackasses like them that screwed it up for us all. However I am excited to see the tides turn with projects like this and a new age of emus break some ground.

No not for the swg server no... i can make all the money i want off the new game i make... again licensing... swg cant be for any profit...

Eh ive pretty much settled on running whatever mmos i make out of this engine... its rock solid aaa quality it was designed to work well over dialup its load balanced, easly worked with, has a GAGGLE of custom made tools for it, its own archiving system and security... it also has a shit ton of features that no other indie type engine has, between this and unity i can now make anything i want to game wise... so theres just no reason for me to... but yeah ive messed with ryzom and all the other mmo engines available just about ask halls lol.

Why am i using this? Well i kinda already went into that NO mmo engine or kit available to indie devs that is REMOTELY Affordable has the features this does... again this ran a game with MILLIONS of players for YEARS... it has features other kits cant dream of... It doesnt cost me a dime and i have FULL Complete access and control of the source code from the client to the content tools to the archive system to the servers. I can run it in windows or linux... It has space sim combat it has ground game people can make their own quests it IS Star wars galaxies... ALL of it... I can change anything at all i want i can change its encryption and keep the source closed and so forth...

I have used EVERY other engine affordable over the last decade... not only does this one blow them all away as it should a it was written BY Sony's(varant games originally) devs( this is the ACTUAL Source not an emulator). its free to use doesnt cost me a dime aside from hosting, It is totally legit for me to make a new game with this i have all the needed documents...

I am making a new game with it as in 100% new in all ways new story new universe new races and professions.... quests all of it i just see no reason not to use a AAA Quality engine when its dropped into my lap

Unity is good but not for networking or large scale projects unless you spend alot of time scripting in asset packs and shit like that to keep the size down... i know i tried importing all the swg assets into it to make a single player game with it... yeah bad idea crashed it repeatedly due to it having tens upon tens upon tens of thousands of files

Other kits are ok but pale in comparison...

Do you ever plan on releasing your source? The source with all the modifications and such. I know you had to have spent some time updating and modifying.

I dunno...

Honestly there are legitimate arguments on both sides of that issue... First Security, Most pay to play mmos dont want their source code out there so people cant read it and find exploits and ways to cheat... I would never be able to release the entire source code as it contains encryption schemes and so forth that are still in place on the daybreak games game servers (everquest and so forth) as all use a unified login it would potentially compromise not only my game but all of theirs... So there is that, id have to pick and choose what source code i gave out and such but the problem is that the source solution is over 300 projects large many things are shared among the projects so itd be a headache...

I have batted around the idea and even made an installer in which you can run the game and change any of the content and so forth client AND server side... it just does not include the source code but that creates issues with the database import unless you use my pre setup oracle virtual box image...

Obviously all my devs will have it... and for their work they have freedom to use it as they chose so long as they dont distribute the source code they can make their own games or run their own servers all day long

If i do that then the login server could potentialy be used for a unified login across many game servers and that may take out the issue of having to dig through all those projects and remove what i absolutely cant give out...

I dunno though really not there just yet lol
