Curious how you think they did the animations on the figures for this game.

Because the characters are pretty simple with no details (they are just colored stick figures), I think it is being generated programmatically. The centerpiece to it is a nice inverse kinematics bone system to keep the characters together. I am not sure what engine or library you are looking at, but a lot of them do support KI bones. For example, here is a tutorial on how to do it with GameMaker. No doubt Unity supports it in 2D as well.

ah nice, thanks for the read. I have been thinking about this and I would love the take the infamous hundreds of RPG maker type sprite charaters and build a fighting game with them with tons of objects like jet packs, rifles, zombie portals, Portal type guns, catapults, ect, and all multiplayer battles. Would be more simple than most imagine.
