We can either find ones that are working and just modify them and make them our own or update a long lost one

Here are some that look fun to mess with

Let me give those games a whirl. I am thinking shadow rising, but will check it out first. We could also add the infamous world of phaos as a suggestion.

Another suggestion is Nengi

https://timetocode.com/nengi

Depends if you think people would rather play a twitch combat game or a strategy combat game.

It is plagued with errors and issues. The massive amounts of dependencies he requires makes getting this to run very difficult. I think I will pass too. Sucks cuz I have been looking for something like this for some time.

I really don't think the basics of real-time multiplayer are really that hard to build out. And even if you don't want to do it from scratch there are MIT-licensed codebases such as Raining Chain that have it working. And since they have the wonderful MIT license, you can do pretty much whatever you want to do with it except sue the original author. You could rip out pretty much the whole game and build a new one on top of the network code.

My biggest need is Interpolation and load balancing. I can have a nodeJs multiplayer game up in 10 minutes but it won't be optimized properly for a large game.

I think no matter how you slice it, for a real-time, multiplayer game in node to house more than 300 or so players on a server you are going to have to either host each zone on its own process or design it fully in a microservice architecture. Even if you don't think you will have that many to start it is probably a good idea to design for that architecture to begin with since it will be harder to change it later.
