Seems to be running pretty smoothly under Chrome now.

Just that canvas bug that was introduced in Chrome 46.

Just did another update.

Implemented agent operations at independent stars (hoping to see emulation of "The Great Game" between Russian and Britain in central Asia)

Added Luxuries, a commodity that requires transport to foreign homeworlds to gain big income.
This is was to encourage more inter-realm travel and make piracy more feasible.

We are just starting a new episode and could use a half dozen more testers.

Hey, yup still plodding along. Game running pretty smoothly now.

Close to the point of opening up to the masses. Any ideas on how to promote a non-commercial game?

Find every list you can and get your game put on it. There are a ton out there if you dig around. One day I should probably compile a list of all the ones I can find like I did with the PBBG engine list, because they are important and useful for getting word out about your game.

Also find every forum that has people on it and slip your game in where you can. For example, you could go to TIGSource and create a "DevLog" on it right now, set it as 90% (or however complete you feel it really is towards gold release) and post often to keep it floating around the top. You can also post in Game Announcement threads on there and forums like it. Also move beyond the developer forums and post in any game player forums you can find. In the end they are going to be your long term players. Particularly ones that would be most interested, such as any 4X community boards.

Once you have a small community built up, enter your game onto those "top game sites" that support your type of game. Offer incentives for your community to vote often to try to get it on the list. Most of the browser-based top sites are smaller, so it doesn't take thousands of people voting to show up on the list.

Enter your game on IndieDB and any other site like it. I am not sure how much traffic it can move just from being on there, as it seems to be kind of a popularity contest where a few games rise to the top and the rest don't get noticed, but I don't think it is hard to enter it.

Make videos on YouTube and title and tag-up your videos for targeted searches that you could dominate, such as "online 4X". I can't imagine there are a ton of other videos out there under that search but it is still sane enough that lots of people probably search it. Create a Twitter, Facebook and everything else if you haven't done so yet. Put up an account on every social network you can. All it takes is your time. The jury is still out on paying to promote your posts. We have had a coupe of people on here try it with mixed results. I think in the end most of them said it was a better use of your money to do more traditional advertising.

That is about all I can think of at the moment but there is probably tons more.

Yeah Jack covered it well. Get out there and spread the word everywhere you can. Some ads are actually quite cheap so I would not deter from at least getting some quotes.
