Isogenic Engine, Any one tried it?

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

Just curious if anyone has tried it yet. I want to give the demo a go but all the networking is stripped out of it so i can't really test it. I will gladly pay $100 for it but want to make sure it is something I will use. I got a whole closet full of engines I never use.

Are you talking about The Isogenic Engine? (No idea why it is called that, as "isogenic" is a genetics term, and has nothing to do with "isometric", which is the style of the engine lol).

I downloaded the free version they offer, but never looked into it. Is that the one you said doesn't include any networking? If so, that is lame, since that is the only part I would be iffy on and would want to try. I have no doubt they can make a good isometric rendering engine in canvas lol.

It does include networking but not in the demo. Only in the $99 version.

Do you know if they have any demo games up that are using the networking? While the free non-networked version is appreciated from them, it has always seemed a bit dicey that there has always been little in the way of games to showcase what the engine is really all about: networked, multiplayer games.

Mmm why would you need such engine anyway? What does it offer that you can't do yourself?

Well, there are thousands of man hours of work in it. You would want to use it for the same reason you would want to use any engine: to get right to work on your game rather than spending the time to create the plumbing.

Yes and no, as always you must evaluate if what they offer (which could be indeed 1000 hours of work) fit your needs and do not instead will slow you down later on. You must also evaluate the fact that taking such engines will costs you time to learn it. From my own experience, if you write the code yourself, you understand it better, and it will fit your need better than taking something already existing.

That doesn't mean I don't use any frameworks, however many things are self written for those reasons.
