RPG Maker

Post by hallsofvallhalla »

RPG Maker still rocks to this day. I was wondering how many people have used it and if they have any games they made with it.

Okay on that note Raven is looking to hold our first contest. A RPG maker game contest. It will be small, nothing huge, just a quick game. The contest is mainly going to be about promoting new ideas and getting people into the spirit of world creation. Anyways we were looking for some feed back,
How should we jusdge the game? Creativity, concept, theme, music, dialog, items, ect.... and should we only allow stock content? That way it is fair.

Feed back is most appreciated.

RPG maker contest, hmm. Nice idea, but it's kinda limited by having just 1 engine to work with.

Some of the criteria ideas:
- visual "flow": the graphics dont have to be cutting edge; they must have a good feel and continuity thorough the game.
-story: it is an RPG and story is the most important thing.
-Creativity: if it has the "wow" factor, or the "that was very smart" factor.
-music: music can make or brake a game
-Content: this is purely numerical, the number of content, bigger is better

hope this helped :D

And stock content should be available for none artists, but if someone is artsy, i think it wouldn't be fare to take out his advantage...

@Sakar
Probably either VX or XP. Since you can still get a trial for both of those.

@kyraneth
I don't think the contest will be limited. As its not about making a game. It's about making a game with either VX or XP. But we haven't decided 100% on what the contest will be yet. But I thank you for your grading criteria ^^.

No problem :D I just said it would be limited 'cause i'm not a fan of Rpg maker so what i can do with this specific engine is pretty limited to me. But i guess specifying the engine would prevent an outbreak of Hall's Disease between the contestants :D:D

AH the dreaded halls disease yes that is an occurrence amongst certain individuals. And like saber said the new version of RPG Maker have very nice scripting language. Very easy to use and pretty powerful to get a 2d rpg up and going.

yes the main point behind the contest is to cause a breakout in creativeness and get the wheels turning in some of the devs. Its always good to take a break from the current mundane to do something fun and new. The game will be a small one, 10 minute or so and if we limit the art the developers can then concentrate more on the world and story and not have to worry about if their art is up to par.
