Do get the datbase working the way I want it to, would it be best to use CONCAT to add additional data but not to over write the data.

The submit button itself doesn't have to know the id. You can do <form method="post" action="update.php?id=123">...</form> to have id in $_GET or have a hidden input <form ...> <input type="hidden" name="id" value="123" /> ... </form> to have it in ...

It means that when the element with id='a1' is clicked, the form with id = 'form1' will submit. And I checked your page it seems you haven't changed the line I stated before.
